Impressive longcase by Joseph Quarman, Somerset, circa 1765
An elegant longcase clock, circa 1765, with a classic mahogany case and detailed columns.
The square hood has gilt capitals and is topped by two swan necks intertwined with gilt rosettes and a lavish eagle finial. The brass dial’s centre is engraved with floral and foliage decoration. The recessed second dial is signed, Joseph Quarman of Temple Cloud. This imposing clock has a brass pillared bird cage movement with anchor escapement and plate-wheel striking on bell.
Joseph Quarman is recorded in A.J. Moore’s ‘The Clockmakers of Somerset 1650-1900’ and his craftsmanship is illustrated in ‘English Domestic Clocks’ by Cescinsky & Webster.
